What are Medicare Agents or Advisors?
Medicare agents or advisors are required to be licensed health insurance agents in order to advise and enroll people in Medicare health plans.
Only licensed health insurance agents are allowed to enroll people in Medicare health plans - Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, or Part D Prescription Drug plans. Medicare agents are required to be certified and licensed at the State government level.
Medicare agents can work for a health insurance company and only enroll people in plans offered by that insurance company, or they can work for an insurance agency/broker and help people compare and enroll in plans from various insurance companies.
Medicare Agents are sometimes referred to as “advisors” because they are supposed to be unbiased, keep the best interests of the Medicare enrollee in mind, and help enrollees find the right Medicare coverage for their needs.
