What is Original Medicare (Traditional Medicare)?

Original Medicare refers to Medicare Part A and Part B and is sometimes called “Traditional Medicare” because it is administered by the federal government and it was the original form of Medicare coverage. Medicare Part A covers hospital insurance while Medicare Part B covers other medical insurance.

Original Medicare enrollees are allowed to receive additional health insurance coverage through a Medicare Supplement plan. Also, beneficiaries can enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan along with Original Medicare.

In the late 90’s the government introduced Part C - Medicare Advantage plans, which replace and bundle Original Medicare Part A and B, and usually Part D, into one health insurance plan. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies, which are approved by the government to administer Medicare benefits.
